In herring oil, the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are bound to phospholipids. The special properties of phospholipids mean that DHA and EPA fatty acids are absorbed more quickly, and you also don't get unpleasant fishy regurgitation. The entire Cook et al study (2016) can be found here.
